One of the reasons I enjoy taking an occasional trip alone is that no one knows me and I don’t have to live up to old expectations. And without a friend I am more inclined to interact with the locals. This, however, does not give me carte blanche to behave inexcusably.
What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas
I’ve heard some interesting stories, especially about pre-wedding showers. It seemingly has become acceptable for those “last flings” whether you’re male or female. I understand that you might not bring these tales home, but secrets have a way of sneaking out, especially with the cell phone cameras, the text page history, and the possibility of a follow up call.
Sex Tourism
When I got off the plane in Bangkok, alone, a woman in front of me gave me some unsolicited advice:” I hope you’re not coming here to find a man, all Westerners only want young locals.” I found the sites, the shopping and the food exhilarating enough to not be disappointed in the lack of men, but I was disgusted with the thought of pedophiles roaming the Patpong area.
In an effort to stop abuse of women and children, Cambodia has initiated a very active billboard campaign. In English, written in bold is: “If you think you can come here and exploit our women and children, think again, you will be prosecuted in your own country!” Many organizations, including UNESCO, are vehemently fighting the sex trafficking that continues to inflict these Asian countries.
Porn on the TV
Once, I went to an all exclusive resort in Cancun. I actually thought that “adults only” meant no children running around. Imagine my surprise when I went into the gym to check out the equipment and discovered hard core pornography on each of the TV sets. While not shocked I wasn’t inclined to get on any of the machines!
Visiting Discriminating Countries
The U.S. State Department warns against travel to certain countries due to political unrest but what about visiting countries that have repressive regimes or are discriminatory toward certain groups? Will your tourist dollar contribute to ongoing abuses?
Ethical Traveler (http://www.ethicaltraveler.org/), a grassroots organization, believes you should put your money where your heart is. Anti-gay countries are listed here http://www.sodomylaws.org/ and http://www.madre.org/ makes one aware of women’s issues worldwide.
One last thing: The Love Boat [Let your moral compass be your guide.]
Okay, no more “high horse” from me. There are cruise ships out there that cater to people looking for some sexual fun. In fact there are some that use the word “orgy” in their advertisements. I dare say that most of us are over 18, practiced, and recognize that new experiences don’t come our way everyday. If the thought of this excites you as much as skydiving does, let your moral compass be your guide. <<
