Finding Pongo

By Molly Abbott

My pet, a year old Dalmatian Pongo, after he finishes his supper I allow him to stroll for a while and get back. On such outings he has made a few friends. A Labrador from next door and a German shepherd from the next block had become his best Pals. One evening when I let Pongo out for his stroll he did not return home. I came out and called out to him. He did not respond. Then worry stirred in me. I went around all the blocks, park, along the creek, calling out to him, whistling and shaking a can of his favorite dog food.

But in vain. The next day again I went around looking for him. I pinned up notices at laundry, library, restaurant, park etc., At the park a little girl was watching me intently. I walked up to her and she asked me if I were looking for my doggie. She said, “ do you know what I do when my cat goes missing.” I asked her, “ what?” She said “ I pray, sort of, I get her picture in my mind. I think of her being safe and surround her with light.” I asked her if it worked. She nodded and asked if she should do it for me. I said yes. She did that and then I walked back home. I was awe- struck to find Pongo at my doorstep. I thanked the little girl fervently in my mind. If our paths crossed again anytime I will reward her suitably.
