The term “blind date” used to scare me to death. Just about all of them were nightmares or forgetable. Except one.By George Mitchel
I was living and working in New York and Lynn had just graduated college and moved to New York with her old room mate. One week-end Lynn’s mother came to visit her from California and they were spending the day in Central Park. They were sitting on the grass and struck up a conversation with a young couple sitting near them. Jan, the woman was also from California and the guy Bill was one of my best friends at the time. They had been recently married. Before the day ended Jan was offering to fix Lynn up with me.
To make it easier on both of us, they invited Lynn and me to dinner, not really calling it a date. I guess I looked pretty good that night because when the girls were by themselves, Lynn confided to Jan, “I think he’s gorgeous.” So a few minutes later when Jan and Bill were off to the side, Jan whispered to Bill, “She thinks he’s gorgeous.” So…a few minutes later when Bill and I were alone, Bill told me, “She thinks you’re gorgeous.” Knowing that gave me the confidence I needed to be “cool.”
After dinner I took Lynn home and said I would like to see her again. I leaned over to give her a polite good night peck on the cheek. Well, she came back with a full open mouth kiss that sent me reeling. I said good night, turned and walked into the wall. We were married a year and a half later and that was 31 years ago. Jan and Bill have been divorced twice since then and seem happy with their respective third spouses.
