The “Betty and Veronica Syndrome” is a term used for when the protaganist has two potential romatic interests, thus assuring that neither relationship will come to full fruition without the protaganist having to choose one or the other.
Veronica and Betty first met in Archie comics in 1939
Blonde Betty and dark-haired Veronica were “best friends and worst enemies,” and both had a huge crush on Archie Andrews.
Betty was the sweet wholesome hometown “girl next door,” in contrast to Veronica, who was a spoiled, rich, and often selfish only child.
(Did you ever notice that except for their hair color, Betty and Veronica looked exactly alike?)
They were good girls, forever 17 years old and formed the female part of the classic love triangle.
By 1950, they came into their own –they had their own comic book, “Archie’s Girls Betty and Veronica.”
1987 - In 1987, a sign of the times, they ditched “Archie’s Girls” in the title and became just “Betty and Veronica.” (It is still being published today, with 200+ issues to date”.
2004 — a new line of dolls and fashion accessories was introduced with the tag line ‘Are you a Betty or Veronica?’ (Eat your hearts out, Olsen twins.)
